Peace lilies are the classic sympathy plant — elegant, easy to care for, and meaningful in the gesture they convey. Phalaenopsis orchids (single- or double-stem, in ceramic or woven containers) are a premium sympathy plant choice, often sent by close friends or family. Dish gardens combine multiple foliage plants in a single presentation, a substantial gift that shows well on a table or mantle. Remembrance plants in meaningful containers (wooden boxes, engraved planters, or containers with a personal connection) can be commissioned for a lasting tribute.

Plants are often the right choice when you want to send something that lasts beyond the first week of grief, when the family has requested donations in lieu of flowers (a small sympathy plant is usually still welcomed alongside a donation in their preferred charity's name), when sending to a funeral home where flowers may have mixed reception, or when the recipient would prefer a living gift over cut flowers.
